1 Timothy 2:1-2
I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, [and] giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and [for] all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
As Christians we’re not asked to join the majority of people in complaining about everything in our countries, church, jobs, social groups etc. Instead we’re enjoined to proffer solutions and answer questions.
We live in a world that’s governed by spiritual forces unobserved by our physical senses. These forces (both good and bad) are constantly contesting for greater influence in the minds of people so as to influence their thinking and actions and as a result affect the aeons, events, lifestyles or destinies of the people.
As a result of these spiritual events, no matter how “good”, qualified, or skilled a leader may be, he/she might just get overwhelmed with the responsibility placed on them if the force of good is not winning out against the negative forces.
Who’s gonna help in advancing these forces of good? Us Christians! According to the Bible we’re the “good” guys, we’re king-priests and judges! When we pray and intercede for our countries and societies in Jesus name, God’s grace is extended in the direction we command. God won’t just barge in and boom everything’s fixed- if He could, He woulda. However, God set principles in place that He refuses to break himself but instead teaches us to take advantage of these principles. One of such principles is prayer! Prayer means conversation with God where He fills us with more information, strength, wisdom and other graces and expects us to take advantage of them for good.
This makes us His partners in advancing the force of good in the world today. He gave us the authority to use the name of Jesus- the name with all divine authority- and prevail over all circumstances with it.
Funny thing however, is the devil is working over time to disrupt God’s plans and he knows that God has incorporated the whole world into His salvation plan through the works of Jesus and he’s hell bent on causing gross destruction in the worlds of men. But we won’t let him win in our worlds, we are effervescent lights in our worlds as we take responsibility in prayer.
Wars, acts of terrorism, hate are all results of the devil’s “hanky pankyings” but it’s time to shut him up today. If I pray, and you pray and we all pray and take advantage of the blessings of prayer nothing can stop good from winning out.
This is also why the apostle Paul asks us to pray for political leaders and all those who occupy other seats of authority like the church leaders, political leaders, business leaders, media, sports, entertainment leaders etc. All these are seats of authority and massive influence where God has key interests and seeks to steer in His path of righteousness. This is why we pray. Things may not be going as good as we want at the moment but they’ll keep going south if we don’t work and pray!
Make it an act of duty to pray often (say once every week for a start) for your country, workplace, city etc that God’s righteous cause prevails in them. And as you pray, God will share with you ideas and actions you can take (from whatever level you’re at) to begin solving the problems you intend to address. That’s how come this blog got started as well .
As we remember the victims of the Manchester terror attack and other horrible acts of hate around the world let’s pray baby, let’s work and pray!
